What to Do If Your Car Overheats While Driving in LA

You're driving through the San Fernando Valley, and suddenly — steam from under the hood, a rising temperature gauge, or a warning light. Your car is overheating.

Here’s what to do:

🔥 Step 1: Pull Over Safely

Turn on your hazard lights and get to the shoulder or side street. Don’t keep driving — it can cause serious engine damage.

🌬 Step 2: Turn Off the Engine

Let the car sit and cool. Opening the hood helps release heat faster, but wait at least 10 minutes before doing so to avoid burns.

💧 Step 3: Do NOT Open the Radiator Cap

The pressure can cause hot coolant to spray out. If you need to check coolant levels, wait until the engine has cooled completely.

📞 Step 4: Call for Help

If the engine won’t cool, or you don’t have coolant on hand, it’s time to call Valley Cat Towing. We’ll come to you fast with roadside help or a tow to a nearby shop.

Common Reasons for Overheating

  • Low coolant

  • Broken fan belt

  • Leaking radiator

  • Thermostat failure
